FAQ’S

What is child/parent dedication and what does it mean?

Dedication of children to the Lord is the act of the child’s parent(s) or parent figures publicly bringing their child in front of the church family at a worship service, declaring their own faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and their intention to raise their child in a Christian atmosphere. It involves a commitment on the parent’s part to model for their child a vital, personal relationship with God through faith in Christ and to raise their child in obedience to the commands found in Deuteronomy 6:5–7:
And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again. (New Living Translation)

What dedication is and what it is not

Publicly dedicating a child to the Lord is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of a child’s happiness or salvation. Salvation is by faith alone and can only be received. They must be old enough to decide whether or not to walk with the Lord. The purpose of the dedication ceremony is for the parents and the church body to pledge to lovingly shepherd the child on their faith journey and to support the child and their family through prayer and encouragement.

Dedication vs. baptism

Christian parents naturally desire their children to receive salvation, but baptizing an infant doesn’t “save.” We believe that water baptism is a physical demonstration to others of what has already occurred in the life of someone who has committed to following Christ — a public declaration of a spiritual relationship with Christ that begins at salvation. We believe baptism is appropriate when a child/person can personally understand and respond to the gospel.
